We have all heard about the foreclosure crisis. But in New Mexico, families have been losing their homes since long before the crisis began. No New Mexico law protects consumers who purchase a home using a real estate contract — a simple agreement to buy land without using third-party financing. As a result, low-income families live without basic infrastructure and are at risk of losing their homes if they miss a single payment. Real estate contract purchasers deserve the same basic consumer protections as other home buyers.
